The Beginning of Summer

Summer is just a few days away, officially. It’s actually began here though with the weather and school being out. The garden is growing and the temperatures haven’t gotten so hot that everything is drying out like it will in July and August. June is a beautiful, green month for us.

Just two nights ago we saw the first lightening bugs. That’s fire flies to some of you. The whole yard was filled with their beautiful shimmer and I stood in the quiet of that incandescent beauty for quite some time. Then suddenly, as quickly as they appeared, they were gone. That was my cue to go inside.

We’re getting intermittent rain as we usually do in June. Just enough to keep everything verdant and fat. Just enough to plump up the tiny little yellow squash in the garden and drive the little house wren under my pergola for protection. She sits almost not moving as the rain pours down. I guess she knows she is safe there. Then it stops and life goes on as usual. Mrs. Wren flies away, back to her daily quest for food.

I have ice cream making in my electric ice cream maker. It was a Pampered Chef purchase of about 15 years ago. It’s still going strong. Today’s flavor is strawberry. I plan to make two or three batches of it and save a couple for Sunday when all the children and grandchildren will be here for a cookout.

The longer the rain comes down, the longer I want to have a cup of tea and read instead of working. And I’ll do that too. But I won’t rest til my work is done, then I’ll relax ad watch the rain until time to make supper.

Summer has never been my favorite season, but I admit it has it’s joys.
